After a gunman opened fire on diners dining on an outside patio at a West Loop restaurant, a manager at a Chicago eating place has condemned Lori Lightfoot.
“Vote these clowns out,” the manager was quoted as saying after being shot in the leg by a gunman.
Lightfoot has come under fire for handling the city’s gun violence epidemic. In the last month alone, there have been over 1,000 shootings in Chicago.
The manager’s comments come as the city is on edge after several high-profile shootings.
On Tuesday, one fatally shot five people in a drive-by shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
Last week, a mass shooting at a funeral home left 15 people wounded.
And on Sunday, 13 people were shot, one fatally, in a single incident in the Englewood neighborhood.
Lightfoot has said that she is “heartbroken” by the violence and has promised to do everything in her power to stop it.
But for many Chicagoans, her words are empty and they are demanding action.
The manager who was shot told local news outlets, “I’ve been saying this for years, vote these clowns out. Every four years, we vote them in and they do nothing.”
“Lori Lightfoot is not the answer; she’s part of the problem,” he continued. “She needs to go.”
The manager of The Aberdeen Tap survived the attack but was shot in the leg. They are currently recovering.
“The shooter rolled down the window and yelled, ‘What the f*ck are you looking at?’ before unloading a clip into a group full of innocent people.
“They were screaming and arguing for close to two minutes while stopped at the stop sign.
“I had a full patio, and people were watching this altercation the entire time.
“The male in the back left seat of the SUV saw everyone watching and proceeded to scream out the window at us, asking WTF we were looking at over and over again.
“Luckily, I am the only one who got shot. And luckily I am still alive. The bullet hit my lower left calf and just missed my bone and an artery. This post isn’t to gain sympathy or pity.
“It is to call out this wild west city that Chicago has become. It is to call out the people who are in charge.
“The ‘leaders’ who should be doing something. Vote these clowns out of office or we will all be paying the price for the next four years.”
Although nobody was harmed gravely, the episode has left many people feeling disconcerted.
Witnesses nearby at another incident that same day say that the gunman was sitting in a white SUV and that there were three people inside the vehicle, possibly two Hispanic men and a Hispanic woman.
The police are currently investigating this other incident and have not released any information about a possible motive.
This is just the latest in a string of violent incidents in Chicago that have left many residents feeling unsafe.
